Important Technical Terms to Understand
Decibels (dB)
The first thing you need to know when it comes to speakers is the dB (decibel) rating. The higher a speaker’s decibels are, the louder they will sound and therefore clearer too! When looking for Bluetooth speakers, be sure that your purchase has at least 20-30dB of volume or more if possible. Some people have said that some products with less than this can even hurt their ears which really defeats the purpose of buying them right? Be mindful about what kind of loudness level you want before investing so much time researching different brands and models because there might not always be an option within your budget or desired specifications for these features.
Sound Pressure Level (SPL)
When we look at the output sound or volume of a speaker and compare it to other speakers, one common way is by looking at their SPL (Sound Pressure Level) which can be measured in dB. This is also sometimes referred to as sensitivity rating for speakers.
Frequently people will ask how loud a given set of speakers would get on average. Well, usually that’s determined by its wattage power ratings combined with what frequency range they cover – like bass frequencies or high-end treble ranges – and whether they are mono or stereo units too! So this tells us now why there might be different specifications listed when you go shopping online for your next purchase: watts per channel; RMS watts vs peak watts; satellite system efficiency versus
Wattage vs Volume
You might be wondering, does a higher wattage provide louder sound? Simply put, no it doesn’t. But the truth is that there are many factors that affect how loud a speaker can get (looking at just one factor like watts won’t tell you much). For example- If we compared two 5W speakers from different brands with identical power ratings and tried them side by side in an isolated room, they would most likely have very similar volume levels.
However, if we place these same two five Watt speakers next to each other on either end of a stadium or large conference hall without any acoustic treatment then the speaker near where people were talking will seem considerably quieter than their counterpart even though both had been rated for exactly the same amount of continuous output power
More decibels = louder?
Simply put, decibel levels are measured on a logarithmic scale. For every increase of 10 decibels, the sound is ten times louder! What this means for you as an audiophile is that speakers with higher dB will be more desirable because they can get much louder than lower-rated models without distortion or loss in quality. The volume, or how loud a speaker gets, is measured by its wattage output (measured in watts) and also by its size – larger speakers produce greater volumes due to their surface area being able to push out air molecules further away. In contrast, smaller ones quickly reach high frequencies but have less volume.
How many decibels is too loud?
It is important to take care of your hearing while listening to music, especially if you do so for long periods of time. Loud noise can be harmful and has been known to cause permanent damage. Our list features speakers that exceed the dangerous threshold at or around 120 dB, which means they may not be appropriate for prolonged exposure unless used in moderation with other sound levels (such as in an occasional concert).
The CDC warns us about how the volume level should stay below 70dB because it could start damaging our ears after a certain period. This warning affects both children who have yet to develop their eardrums AND adults alike!

Understanding Speakers and What Makes Them Loud
RMS Wattage vs Peak Power
If you want to know how loud a sound system can get, the best thing is not the peak power but rather its RMS wattage. Peak power does relate to volume levels but only indirectly because it doesn’t tell us anything about what percentage of time that level will be reached or sustained and other factors such as frequency response are also important in determining just how high (or low) we’ll hear certain frequencies.
RMS Wattage
The RMS Wattage is what you need to know when checking out speakers. This will tell you how much continuous power the speaker can handle, so it won’t stop working in the middle of your party and leave everyone high and dry! For instance, if a product has 30 Watts of Continuous Power (RMS), that means they are able to run for hours on end without stopping or slowing down. The only time this might change is if there was an increase in volume during playback—but don’t worry; these things happen all the time with even great equipment like ours!
Peak Power
Peak power refers to the speaker’s maximum output. The RMS and peak values are still important since you want a speaker that can handle both short bursts of high volume sound as well as long periods with low levels.
Power VS Volume
Wondering how much of a dB increase you will get if you double the power? As mentioned earlier in this article, wattage is used to measure volume. We now know that every 10dB (SPL) represents a ten-fold increase – but this rule does not apply to speaker wattages. An 80W speaker isn’t twice as loud as a 40W one, it’s 3db louder!
The principle concept here is that when an amplifier’s watts are doubled there are only about three decibels more added on top of what we already have which means doubling your speakers’ power won’t really make them any louder than they were before – and can often cause distortion or other unwanted issues with sound quality such as clipping at high volumes
Speaker Efficiency vs Sensitivity
The more efficient a speaker is, the less power it requires to produce sound. The term “speaker efficiency” describes how much of its input energy is converted into sound waves and propagated through the airwaves by virtue of mechanical vibrations that cause pressure changes in ambient air molecules or water droplets (in humid environments).
The speakers most commonly used are dynamic drivers which require an electrical signal for operation. If you want your audio equipment to run off battery sources such as solar panels, this type should be avoided because they consume large amounts of electricity from batteries without producing adequate output levels when played at higher volumes over long periods with no indication of battery life remaining.
How loud will it be? Where does the wattage come into play? The sensitivity rating tells us how much power is needed to reach a particular volume. To calculate this, divide 3 dB by 2 then multiply that number by your desired speaker’s output level in watts (e.g., if you want 60 watts of sound and have a 15-watt speaker or 30 feet away from an amplifier). This gives us the minimum amount of amps necessary for optimal performance at any distance!
More About Decibels
For most of us, the decibel is used to measure sound pressure level (SPL), but did you know that it only becomes a measurement once it’s assigned? A dB really doesn’t mean anything until we give it a unit – such as SPL. This also means that when one number increases by 10dB in relation to another number, this increase can be up or down depending on which numbers are being compared! For example: If your home stereo sounds twice as loud as before and reaches 80db then go ahead and rock out because there has been an increase of 20dB from 50DB.
The lowest sound level that humans can hear is the 0 SPL threshold or 20 micro pascals. For all other sounds to be compared against this, we need a reference point. Scientists have decided on using it as such; however, there are different levels of noise people may not even notice at times due to our brains adapting over time.
When you work with an amplifier – for example when recording music – your amplified signal is measured by decibels (dB). dB represents how many 10ths of a unit of power per square meter exist between two points where one has a louder volume than the other: closer proximity means higher intensity-data transfer rates like these can also depend on what type of connection cables you’re using
