- Best Portable PA System (Best Overall)
If sound quality is important to you, the Bose S1 Pro or the JBL EON206P portable PA systems will deliver the greatest results. Keep in mind that these are just under $1000, but if sound quality is important to you, this is a minor price to pay. Both of these systems are extremely versatile, with ample power for both indoor and outdoor use, and may be used for DJ gigs, live music, and conferencing.
The Yamaha STAGEPAS 400I is the greatest system for live music. The system costs less than $500 and produces outstanding sound for voices, acoustic guitars, and keyboards.
If you’re looking for a DJ system, the Bose S1 Pro has enough power and low end. The system is, however, a tad out of most people’s budgets at slightly under $1000.
The Rockville RPG122K or the PRORECK PARTY 15 are both good possibilities if you’re looking for something less expensive. For larger DJ events, both of these systems will require extra subwoofers, especially for EDM, hip-hop, and R&B genres.
The Fender Passport Conference PA System is the best solution if you only require a PA system for speeches and background music for conferences, weddings, meetings, and other events. This PA system was created exclusively for this application, with easy-to-use settings and excellent vocal clarity. The Passport Conference is portable and folds down to the size of a suitcase for simple transportation and storage.
The LyxPro SPA-8, which costs a little under $110, is another outstanding speaker for speech and background.
If space is a constraint, the LyxPro SPA-8 is the smallest PA system available. However, there is only one speaker. If you require more than one speaker, the JBL EON206P and the Fender Passport Conference systems are similar in size and have two speakers and a mixer. Both of these little PA systems provide excellent sound and cost the same amount, so the decision will come down to whether you favor JBL or Fender as a brand.
The LyxPro SPA-8 is the cheapest alternative if you only need a simple budget PA system. It costs just under $110. If you need a cheap all-in-one PA system, the Rockville RPG122K and the PRORECK PARTY 15 are excellent options. The RPG122K will set you back roughly $230, while the PRORECK will set you back just under $290.
The Bose S1 Pro is a portable, ultra-lightweight PA system. Small venues, one-man bands or duos, and corporate DJs will love it.
Factors To Consider When Buying The Best Portable PA System
It is important to select the appropriate PA system for the job. If you get it right, you’ll never sound better. If you get it wrong, you could not be heard at all. Of course, the size of the venues you’ll be playing, the number of sound sources you’ll be plugging in, and your budget will all influence the portable PA you choose.
Inputs
Let’s start with the number of inputs you require as a starting point. Fortunately, every portable PA system on our list allows you to connect instruments and microphones directly to the speaker via the onboard mixer, eliminating the need for additional equipment and reducing the amount of gear you have to carry. However, it does imply that you should consider the number of inputs you require before making a purchase.
While units like the Bose S1 or the Mackie Thump GO will happily let a singer-songwriter plug in an acoustic guitar, vocal microphone, and backing track, it’s worth thinking about whether you’ll need any more inputs for additional instruments down the road.
Power
The system’s power is, of course, the next factor to consider. Now, how strong – or loud – your system should be is determined by a number of things. The wattage you choose will be determined by a variety of factors, including the size of the venue, the number of people in attendance, and whether you are indoors or outdoors. Most manufacturers will provide a general estimate of the size of the gig their speakers can handle, so visit their website for further information.
Features
Many modern PAs come with a slew of extra functions, but how many of these high-tech extras do you really need? Most systems, for example, include built-in effects like reverb, chorus, delay, and compressors. These are required for musical performances but are not required for spoken word. In both cases, a powerful EQ function comes in helpful because it allows you to finely shape the sound.
It’s also worth noting that many systems now include a smartphone app that allows you to mix music wirelessly from anywhere in the venue, which is a very useful feature.
Our Selection of the Best Portable PA Systems
1. Bose S1 Pro
Specs & Features
Power | 150W |
Recommended Audience Size | 50 People |
Inputs | 3 |
Outputs | 2 |
Weight | 15.7 lbs |
Dimensions | 9.4 x 13.1 x 11.1 inches |
High-quality components give the Bose S1 Pro its strong and long-lasting construction. A strong metal grill is put in front of the speakers to keep them secure and shield them from harm. Because it is small and light, you can move this portable speaker around easily and with little effort.
The Bose S1 Pro is compact and simple to store, measuring 11.1 by 9.4 by 13.1. It should be easy for you to find space for it in your house, car, RV, or garage. Additionally, it has a low profile because it is only 11 inches long and 13 inches high. Consequently, you are receiving a lot of sound from a speaker that is largely hidden from view.
The Bose S1 Pro’s “multi-position” feature, as the company calls it, is one of my favorite features. This implies that you can set the speaker at different angles and in different positions to achieve the ideal sound. You can stand it straight up, lay it on its back, or turn it on its side. Because of its excellent design, the Bose S1 Pro won’t move when in any posture.
You can insert a stand into the stand socket that is located underneath the speaker’s base. You can adjust the speaker’s height to the precise level you choose by inserting a stand into the socket. The speaker’s back has user-friendly controls that are slightly recessed so that nothing protrudes from the speaker. This lowers the possibility of something breaking while the speaker is traveling.
The Bose S1 Pro speaker comes with the speaker itself, a wire to power the device, and the user manual. Because of this, even folks who aren’t familiar with technology can easily use the speaker.
Inputs & Outputs
The inputs, outputs, and control panel are located on the back of the subwoofer. On the L1 compact, there are two input channels. The first is a single XLR that may be adjusted for volume, bass, and treble. The second is a line input with ¼-inch, ⅛-inch, or stereo RCA input options. There is a separate volume control for the second channel, but no tone control.
Bose’s inbuilt ToneMatch® technology optimizes the input and sound for either voice or acoustic guitar on both inputs. A ¼-inch jack and stereo RCA outputs are available.
If you require more inputs, the Bose T1 ToneMatch or T8S ToneMatch digital audio mixers, created particularly for Bose L1 speaker sets, can be purchased. The ToneMatch mixer lets you customize each input’s EQ and FX and modify each channel’s input gain and volume separately. This is ideal for a pair or even a one-man band that plays numerous instruments.
A standard mixer will suffice as well. To connect to an external mixer, use the second or line channel on the L1 Compact with stereo RCA input.
Sound & Technical
When it comes to speakers and audio equipment, Bose is among the most well-known manufacturers. Since the Bose S1 Pro is a small, lightweight, and compact gadget, it should come as no surprise that it produces a strong and robust sound.
You’ll experience exceptional audio and superb playback quality. You’ll get a sound that is distinct and clear whether you opt to use Bluetooth or a wire.
If you’re not really into manually tuning the sound, the device also has an automated adjuster. With this function, your device will react to the sound it makes and adjust as necessary. Because each side of the Bose S1 Pro offers a different interface, this feature is exclusive to that model.
As a result, after determining the beam angles, the device modifies the sound according to its location. Bose accomplishes this using a position sensor that you install on your tablet or smartphone. The sensor receives a signal when the speaker’s position or location changes, and the equalization automatically adjusts the sound as a result.
What’s in the box?
- L1 Compact power stand (subwoofer)
- Power stand canvas speaker cover
- L1 Compact loudspeaker array (mid/high speakers)
- 2 x L1 Compact Extensions
- Extensions carry bag
- Power stand cord
Best Applications for the Bose L1 Compact PA System
Small venues, one-man bands or duos, and corporate DJs will benefit from the Bose L1 Compact. The system is ultra-compact, taking up very little space, making it ideal for acoustic acts performing in tiny venues such as coffee shops.
Especially though the L1 Compact has a lot of power for its size, I wouldn’t advocate using it with live drums because they’ll overpower the speakers, even if you have a double stack setup. The L1 Compact is ideal for an electronic drum kit and percussion.
The L1 Compact is easy to carry and transport for one-man installations, even utilizing a small automobile, thanks to its tiny size. The L1 Compact is ideal for schools, churches, and community centers seeking for a portable utility PA because it takes up very little space and is simple to transport and set up.
2. Yamaha STAGEPAS 400I Portable PA System
Specs & Features
Power | 400W |
Recommended Audience Size | 150 People |
Inputs | 11 |
Outputs | 3 |
Weight | 41.6 lbs |
Dimensions | 26.8 x 14.8 x 22.0 inches |
The Yamaha STAGEPAS 400I is a high-end PA system with a low price tag. Two powered 8″ speakers and an 8-channel analog mixer are included in the package. There are also two ¼-inch speaker cables as well as power cables for the speakers and mixer. The speaker stands must be purchased individually.
The speakers are designed to double as storage in the system. A deep container with a lid on one of the speakers stores all of the cables. A similar recess can be found on the second speaker, however, this one houses the mixer. So, omitting the speaker stands, you can carry the full system in one hand and a speaker in the other. You won’t have to worry about forgetting cables or other essentials because everything is properly organized.
Yamaha also sells a fantastic padded bag that fits both speakers as well as an additional pouch for cords and accessories. The case is on wheels, making it simple for one person to move around. The STAGEPAS 400I will easily fit in the trunk of a sedan with or without the case.
Inputs & Outputs
The four XLR inputs on the STAGEPAS 400I compact mixer can all be switched to mic or line level. Two of the XLR inputs can accept either an XLR or a ¼-inch connector. A high impedance option for instruments is included on the fourth XLR channel.
Two stereo channels are available. 2 x ¼-inch or stereo RCA connectors are required for the first channel. The second stereo channel is set up for two ¼-inch speakers, and one ⅛-inch AUX, or USB. These channels are ideal for keyboards, MP3 players, and other musical instruments. It is possible to change the stereo channels from mono to stereo.
All of the channels have a 15dB reduction or boost on the bass and treble EQ. Yamaha’s SPX digital reverb is also present on the four XLR channels, with separate level adjustments for the effects. You can pick between hall, plate, room, or echo effects on the master control panel. Yamaha has integrated a footswitch control for muting and unmuting the effects.
This function will come in handy if you’re a one-man band or duo without a sound engineer. With a foot switch, you may mute and unmute vocal effects without having to walk over to the mixer or, even worse, leaving the effects on at the end of each song. This simple feature will greatly improve the look and sound of your performances.
The STAGEPAS 400I mixer also has a built-in feedback suppressor, which comes in handy when using delicate headset microphones. There’s also a pre-programmed EQ selector for choosing between voice, music, or bass enhancement. When playing music from an MP3 player or DJ, the bass boost comes in handy. There’s also a phantom power switch that, if necessary, sends phantom power to channel 2.
There are ¼-inch jack-outs on all of the outputs. You also have a stereo monitor output and a subwoofer out in addition to the master left/right.
Sound & Technical
Each STAGEPAS 400I speaker has an 8″ driver and a 1″ tweeter that can provide 200W of power. Depending on how the room is put up, this is enough sound for around 150-200 people. The STAGEPAS 400I speakers have exceptional clarity in the mids and highs, as well as excellent vocal intelligibility. The system lacks subfrequencies due to the lack of a subwoofer, but the STAGEPAS 400I does a superb job of delivering a solid snappy bass sound.
What’s in the box?
- 2 x 8” STAGEPAS 400I speakers
- 1 x 8-channel STAGEPAS 400I mixer
- 2 x ¼ inch speaker cables
- 3 x Power cables
Best Applications for the Yamaha STAGEPAS 400I
Because of its small size, the STAGEPAS 400I is ideal for one-man bands, duos, or even three-piece bands. The STAGEPAS 400I is a tiny utility PA that can be used in a variety of settings, including schools, churches, and community centers. The STAGEPAS 400I is not appropriate for a full band with drums due to its 8″ drivers. This system will be readily overpowered by the drummer.
3. Fender Passport Conference PA System
Specs & Features
Power | 375W |
Recommended Audience Size | 150 People |
Inputs | 6 |
Outputs | 3 |
Weight | 35 lbs |
Dimensions | 10.0 x 25.0 x 19.0 inches |
The Fender Passport Conference is a small but powerful PA system. When packed, the Conference folds up into a suitcase that weighs only 31 pounds and can be carried with one hand. Two 5.25″ powered speakers and a five-channel mixer make up the system. The accessory bundle pack, which contains speaker stands and cables, is also available for purchase.
Inputs & Outputs
The Conference mixing console is a straightforward five-channel mixer with three mono channels that accept XLR or ¼-inch jack connections. Each of the three channels has a tone and volume control, as well as a 20dB pad for instruments.
Two ¼-inch jacks or a single ⅛-inch AUX input are available on the stereo channel. There is also a tone and volume control on this channel.
A ¼-inch monitor or headphone output with its own volume control is located at the bottom of the mixer. The master volume is located at the very top. On the back of the mixer are the master left/right 14-inch speaker outputs.
The speaker outputs being on the back helps to segregate the inputs from the outputs, making the Passport Conference a straightforward system to set up and manage, especially for non-techies. The mixer is well-organized, with wide rotary faders and no clutter to confound or distract.
Sound & Technical
A 5.25″ driver and two 2.75″ tweeters are used in each Passport Conference speaker. The Passport Conference is ideal for speaking and conference applications because of its two big tweeters. The speaker provides outstanding vocal clarity, which is what this system was supposed to achieve in the first place. For singing, background music, or acoustic guitar, the modest 5.25″ driver provides enough warmth.
What’s in the box?
- 2 x Fender Passport Conference PA Speakers
- 5-channel mixer
Best Applications for the Fender Passport Conference
The Fender Passport Conference was created with the goal of being a portable, easy-to-use conference PA system. It’s ideal for any spoken voice application, and it might even be utilized for wedding ceremonies without a PA system. The technique works well with small groups of 100-150 individuals.
While the Fender Passport Conference can be used to create a one-man band, it lacks EQ and vocal effects. Fender’s Passport line includes two slightly larger systems, the Passport Event, and Passport Venue, that are better suited to musicians.
Vocal effects and EQ are available in both the Event and the Venue. For medium to big venues, the systems are also substantially more powerful than the Conference system.
4. Behringer EUROPORT EPS500MP3
Specs & Features
Power | 500W |
Recommended Audience Size | 200 People |
Inputs | 7 |
Outputs | 4 |
Weight | 41.4 lbs |
Dimensions | 10.9 x 10.1 x 18.4 inches |
The Behringer EUROPORT EPS500MP3 is made up of two 8-inch passive speakers and a 500-watt powered mixer. Each speaker has a storage compartment in the back. On one speaker, there is an empty chamber large enough to store the two 20-foot speaker wires as well as the mixer’s power adaptor.
The 8-channel mixer is stored in the second speaker. The EUROPORT EPS500MP3 speaker system includes a big handle and weighs less than 20 pounds, making it easy to carry and transport.
Inputs & Outputs
The EUROPORT EPS500MP3 includes an 8-channel mixer with a lot of features. There are four switchable mic/line mono channels with an XLR or ¼-inch input choice. Each mono channel features a volume control, as well as bass and treble adjustments and the option to turn on or off reverb effects. The reverb volume can be modified on the master control panel.
You can pick between stereo ¼ or RCA input on the first stereo channel, and stereo RCA or USB on the second stereo channel. The USB input can be accessed through the master control panel, which includes play/pause, skip forward/backward, random, and shuffle buttons.
Finally, there’s a wireless USB input from Behringer. The Behringer wireless handheld microphone systems are compatible with this input. A single or dual Behringer wireless handheld can be plugged into the USB connector.
A VOP button is located next to the master volume control. When the VOP is activated, it will automatically duck music under any speech, which is useful for making a brief statement without having to turn down the volume. The Contour button is located next to VOP and has two pre-programmed EQ settings for voice or music.
Sound & Technical
The 500W mixer-amplifier powers two passive 8″ speakers on the Behringer EUROPORT EPS500MP3. Even though it lacks the sub-frequency range that is required of a speaker this size, the 8″ speaker does an excellent job of generating a robust bass sound. The mid-range is fine, but vocals seem a touch boxy. The highs are clean and clear, offering the speaker good speech intelligibility.
What’s in the box?
- 2 x Behringer EUROPORT EPS500MP3 8” speakers
- 1 x 8-channel mixer
- 1 x Power cable
- 2 x 20’ ¼ speaker cables
Best Applications for the Behringer EUROPORT EPS500MP3
In small to medium-sized settings, the Behringer EUROPORT EPS500MP3 is meant to be compact and out of the way. The mixer can be positioned at the back of the speaker, allowing it to be placed in a tiny space with a small footprint. You can use the VOP capability to have the system play without having to worry about a sound operator turning down the music for fast announcements.
This is especially useful for small venues with limited technical resources. If you buy the Behringer wireless mics, you can use the EUROPORT EPS500MP3 to play music directly from the USB port, eliminating the need for cords.
You can’t see anything but the speakers and microphones because the mixer is mounted on the back of the speaker. Great for weddings and corporate events where the organizers frequently demand that the equipment be kept as hidden as possible.
For one-man bands or duos, churches, schools, and community centers, the EUROPORT EPS500MP3 is ideal. The system is portable, inexpensive, simple to set up, and produces a lot of sound for its size. Depending on the configuration, this is ideal for groups of up to 200 people. For a complete band with drums, the EUROPORT EPS500MP3 is insufficient.
5. JBL EON206P Portable PA System

Each channel features its own volume and reverb settings, as well as a 2-band EQ, bass, and treble controls. The reverb also features an on/off switch, allowing it to be turned off entirely.
You can use a ¼-inch jack or RCA input for the stereo channel. There is no EQ or reverb on the stereo channel, only a volume control. Finally, there is an ⅛-inch AUX input. This channel has no volume control, so you’ll have to manage it at the source, whether it’s an MP3 player, iPad, or smartphone.
A simple master volume control and stereo monitor out with RCA connection are located on the main control panel. The two ¼-inch speaker outputs are located on the back of the mixer.
Sound & Technical
Two 80W powered 6.5″ speakers with 1″ tweeters are included in the EON206P. The sound quality of the EON206P is excellent, as one would expect from JBL. The bass is rich and warm, while the mid-range and highs are crystal clear. These little JBL speakers deliver excellent sound quality for vocals, instruments, and music.
JBL EON ONE
The JBL EON ONE might be a better pick if you like the JBL name and want greater power. A 10″ subwoofer is coupled with six 2″ high-frequency drivers in a line-array configuration to provide a total of 380W. The JBL EON ONE produces outstanding sound, with a strong bass response and crisp clarity in the mids and highs. The system folds up, with all of the components fitting inside the 40-pound subwoofer, making it simple to travel and store.
The EON ONE’s mixer is identical to the EON206P’s, with the exception of Bluetooth connectivity, which allows you to stream directly from your MP3 player or smart device. While the JBL EON ONE outperforms most other tiny PA systems in terms of sound quality, the system costs just under $1000 for one speaker stack. As a result, a complete left/right PA system would cost $2000. This system is undoubtedly a worthy purchase if you are a professional performer or if you have a high-end venue.
The JBL EON ONE PRO, which comes with a built-in 6-hour battery, costs $300 extra. Perfect for outdoor performances where power outlets are scarce.
What’s in the box?
- 2 x powered EON206P 6.5” speakers
- 2 x ¼ inch speaker cables
- 1 x 4-channel mixer
- 3 x power cables
Best Applications for the JBL EON206P
Although the JBL EON206P has a restricted number of channels, it is a very versatile system for a variety of applications. The EON206P is an ideal plug-and-play system for one-man bands performing in small venues such as bars and cafés. Having EQ and reverb on each channel is fantastic for giving the vocals and acoustic guitar some life. Between sets, you can listen to music on the stereo channel.
The EON206P can also be used as a portable utility PA for schools, churches, and community centers that require a small, easy-to-use system. Because of its modest size and channels, the EON206P is only ideal for a few inputs and background music in small settings.

Each PRORECK PARTY 15 speaker has a 15″ driver and a 1″ tweeter, and each speaker delivers 100W RMS. PRORECK claims that the PARTY 15 can output 2000W P.M.P.O. However, this spec refers to program power, which has no bearing on the real power output. This wattage standard is never mentioned by a premium brand.
The sound quality of the PARTY 15 is average. Instruments and vocals sound boxy and lack clarity. The PARTY 15 really shines when it comes to music and DJ settings. For genres like hip-hop and dance music, the 15″ speakers give a large amount of power with a good amount of bass.
What’s in the box?
- 2 x 15” speakers (one with built-in amplifier and mixer)

Two 10″ speakers, each with a 100W RMS power output, are included in the Musysic PA-SYS10 PA System. The device is surprisingly loud and has a large throw range of 100-200 feet. Ideal for sporting events or a street celebration in the open air.
Overall, the Musysic PA-SYS10 PA System sound quality is adequate, but not exceptional. The speakers provide a reasonable amount of bass, but it’s not a very tight sound, and depending on what you’re listening to, it may become a little wooly. The mid-range is boxy, but it’s clear enough for vocals and music.
What’s in the box?
- 2 x 10” passive speakers + speaker cables
- 2 x speaker stands
- 1 x 6-channel powered mixer
- 1 x dual wireless receiver with two handheld microphones

Since 1965, Peavy has been creating and manufacturing low-cost professional audio equipment. The Peavey APP Audio Performer Pack is a compact size PA system with a lot of versatility. Two 10″ passive speakers with cables and supports, two PVi 100 microphones with XLR connections, and a PVi 4B powered mixer make up the system. Bags and cases for any of the items are not included in the system, so you’ll have to buy them individually.
Inputs & Outputs
The PVi 4B mixer is ultra-compact and meant to be set up and positioned near the speakers on the floor or on a table. Four mono input channels with XLR or ¼-inch inputs are available on the mixer. Each channel has its own volume, tone, and built-in reverb controls.
The master volume, master reverb, and tape controls are all found on the master panel (RCA input on the rear). Three tone adjustments for bass, mids, and treble are located behind these controls.
The PVi 4B has a ¼-inch speaker output (left/right) and a footswitch for the internal effects on the back. You can mute and unmute the reverb without having to touch the mixer if you use a foot switch. An RCA input/output and a ¼ mix out on the back can be used to connect to a powered speaker, monitor, or subwoofer.
Sound & Technical
The two 10″ speakers in the Peavey APP Audio Performer Pack produce a tremendous level of volume, which is the first thing you notice. They make a lot of noise! More power is delivered by these two 50W RMS speakers than by some 100W speakers.
Although there is no sub-bass, the low end does generate a distinct bass response. Perfect for acoustic guitars, keyboards, or background music in general. The clarity of the mids and highs is exceptional, which is ideal for vocalists and music.
The Peavey APP Audio Performer Pack delivers substantial power and sound quality for a sound system around $400.
The built-in reverb is the one flaw in the Peavey APP Audio Performer Pack. It sounds strange and unlike any other reverb I’ve ever used. It’s the only aspect of the system that I don’t think is worth it.
What’s in the box?
- 1 x PVi 4B mixer
- 2 x PVi 10 10″ passive speakers
- 2 x PVi 100 microphones
- 2 x speaker stands
- 2 x XLR microphone cables
- 2 x ¼ speaker cables

The Peavey APP Audio Performer Pack is also ideal for schools, churches, and community organizations searching for a compact utility PA system at a low price. The setup would be ideal for a mobile DJ, but you would need to complement the low-end with a subwoofer.
10. Rockville RPG122K PA System
Specs & Features
Power | 250W |
Recommended Audience Size | 200 People |
Inputs | 6 |
Outputs | 2 |
Weight | 60.25 lbs |
Dimensions | 2.3 x 15.5 x 22.5 inches |
One powered and one passive 12″ speaker are included with the Rockville RPG122K PA System. The powered speaker includes a speaker output that may be connected to the passive speaker for a left/right PA setup. Two speaker stands are included, with a ¼-inch speaker cable connecting the two speakers. A switchable cable microphone with a cord is also supplied. The first two channels handle the stereo RCA and MP3 inputs, while the third channel controls the XLR and ¼-inch jack inputs. You can choose between RCA and MP3 with a switch.
SD card, USB, and Bluetooth ports are all available on the MP3 input screen. Toggling between the three inputs is done using a mode button. Play/pause, track-skip forward/backward, repeat, and a six-segment pre-programmed EQ are among the other MP3 controls. A remote control is also available for these settings.
A master volume, bass, and treble adjustment may be found under the master area. You can connect the primary speaker to the second passive speaker using a ¼-inch speaker out.
Sound & Technical
The Rockville RPG122K is a powerful speaker with plenty of bass and scorching highs. The midrange is a little boxy, which will be an issue for live performers and speech, but the system was meant for music and DJ applications, and the RPG122K is ideal for these purposes.
Even for DJs, the RPG122K system lacks sub-bass, so invest in one of Rockville’s RBG subwoofers, which come in 10″, 12″, 15″, or 18″ active speakers. I would recommend the 15″ or 18″ active subwoofer for the RPG122K.
What’s in the box?
- 2 x 12” speakers (one active with built-in mixer, one passive)
- 2 x speaker stands
- Speaker cable link (active to passive speaker)
- Microphone with cable
- Remote control
- Power cable
Best Applications for the Rockville RPG122K
DJs, karaoke, and home parties will all benefit with the Rockville RPG122K. The system is made for music applications like these, where you want to start a party.
Due to the lack of features required by singers and instruments, the Rockville RPG122K system is not recommended for live music applications. The microphone is adequate for announcements but not for long discussions or speeches.
Common PA System terms Explained
Need some assistance deciphering your watts from decibels? Don’t worry, it’s not nearly as tough to comprehend as it appears. In this part, I’ll walk you through some of the technical jargon you’ll encounter when shopping for a new PA system.
What is a PA system?
PA stands for public address system, and it refers to a speaker (or speakers) that produces sound (speech or music) for an audience. A PA system can consist of a single speaker with a microphone, an MP3 player, or a multi-speaker setup like those seen at concerts and festivals.
Wattage
When it comes to purchasing speakers, the most common parameter used is wattage. The audio power transmitted from an amplifier to a speaker is measured in watts. The wattage of your speakers is crucial since it controls how loud they are. The larger the crowd and venue you can fill, the more watts you have. Watts aren’t a unit of measurement for volume – decibels are (dB).
When shopping for a PA system, keep in mind that there are only two wattage requirements to consider: RMS (root mean squared) and peak output. The average power output of an amplifier is RMS, while the maximum power output is peak.
A Program Power (P.M.P.O.) metric may be included by some manufacturers. This is an irrelevant parameter that should be ignored. Only look at RMS and Peak, with RMS being the most essential measure because it represents the nominal/average power output of your speakers.
Decibels (dB)
A decibel is a measurement of how loud something is in basic terms. In the same way that miles are used to measure distance. On a specification sheet, the quantity of decibels a speaker can output is usually listed under ‘sensitivity.’ The measurement of 1W of sound at 1 meter is the universal standard for calculating sensitivity.
To determine how loud and efficient a speaker will be, the sensitivity and wattage specifications should be considered together. It’s difficult to judge precisely – only by hearing a speaker can you determine the speaker’s “truth.” Check out our selection of the loudest Bluetooth speakers available.
Frequency Response
On paper, frequency response is a challenging criterion to establish a speaker’s sound profile. Human hearing can detect frequencies ranging from 20Hz to 20kHz, which is referred to as full-range hearing (as this is the full range of human hearing). Many speakers claim to have a full-range response, but what this sounds like in fact is quite different.
This is due to the fact that frequency response isn’t always perfectly linear. A 20Hz to 20kHz response is possible, with some frequencies being louder than others. A 10″ speaker, for example, is inefficient at producing sub-bass frequencies at high levels but excels at producing mid-range and high frequencies.
The frequency response of a conventional 10″ speaker can span from 20Hz to 20kHz. However, the subfrequency range from 20Hz to roughly 200Hz will be up to 12dB lower than the remainder of the frequency range. As a result, it’s critical to pay attention to how a speaker works in order to figure out how much of the frequency response is heard and at what levels.
In our detailed tutorial, you can learn more about frequency response and how it influences your music.
EQ
In the audio industry, EQ stands for equalization and can be used as a noun or a verb. It is a noun that refers to a piece of audio frequency adjustment equipment. EQ is a verb that is used to increase or cut frequencies in a speech or instrument to achieve the desired sound.
Gain vs Volume
Gain and volume on an input channel are available on all professional mixers, as well as certain entry-level models. At first appearance, they appear to perform the same thing: increase and decrease the volume. They do but for various purposes.
Take a garden hose with a nozzle on one end and an attachment on the other. You can control the amount of water that comes out by opening and closing the hose attachment. The pressure you transmit to the actual hose attachment, on the other hand, is determined by the tap. So if you only turn the tap on slightly, you won’t have much water to deal with. Too much pressure, on the other hand, will make it difficult to control the volume of water properly.
Consider gain to be the tap and volume to be the hose. You want to open the gain to get enough audio signal to work with, but not so much that you can’t get the fader on the mixer to at least 90%.
PAD
A pad is an attenuation switch that allows you to lower a channel’s or piece of equipment’s input level. Typically, a pad will have a -10dB to -30dB range (depending on the mixer). On a mixer input channel, however, -20dB is the most common.
A pad is useful for instruments that produce a lot of gain, such as guitars, keyboards, and occasionally vocals. When the input signal is too high to gain down any further, a pad is used to lower the level and give you more control.
Speaker Drivers
A speaker driver is simply another way of referring to a speaker. A speaker is usually referred to as the entire device, whereas the driver is the actual speaker or tweeter inside the enclosure. A driver can be anything from a little tweeter to a huge 18″ driver.
XLR Connector
A three-pin audio connector known as an XLR is utilized in professional audio equipment.
