The Basics of Car Audio
The world of car audio has undergone a significant series of evolution and developments over time, from the first basic AM radio receiver installed for commercial use in automobiles almost a century ago to the high-performing car speakers that are now considered essential in any vehicle.
The vast majority of signal sources available today can be reproduced by modern car audio systems, including AM/FM radio, Bluetooth, CDs, USB flash drives, and various wired connections.
The relationship between the three elements of any car audio setup—the radio (or head unit), the power amplifier, and the speakers—is the first and most crucial concept to understand before beginning your search for the best car speakers.
The Radio Unit
The radio unit, also known as the head unit, serves as the command centre of your car’s audio system. It allows you to control various audio sources, such as AM/FM radio, CDs, streaming services, and auxiliary devices. Let’s explore the features and functions of the radio unit:
- Audio Sources: The radio unit provides access to different audio sources, enabling you to tune in to your favourite radio stations, play CDs, connect your smartphone or MP3 player, and stream music wirelessly. It acts as a hub for accessing and managing your preferred audio content.
- Controls and Interfaces: The controls and interfaces on the radio unit allow you to navigate through menus, adjust volume, select audio sources, and tune radio frequencies. Many modern radio units also incorporate touchscreen displays, making the operation more intuitive and user-friendly.
The Amplifier
The amplifier is a crucial component that boosts the audio signal and delivers it to the speakers with enhanced power and clarity. Here are the key aspects of amplifiers in-car audio systems:
- Power Output: Amplifiers amplify the weak audio signals from the radio unit to provide sufficient power to drive the speakers. The power output of an amplifier is measured in watts per channel, indicating how much energy it can deliver to the speakers.
- Channel Configurations: Amplifiers come in various channel configurations, including mono (1-channel), 2-channel, 4-channel, and more. Your design depends on the number of speakers in your system and your desired audio setup.
The Speakers
The speakers’ responsibility is to faithfully reproduce the input signal. In order to achieve a full-range response, the majority of basic car audio systems employ two-way speakers, which combine variously sized and specialized speakers in a single cabinet.
In essence, a speaker is in charge of transforming an electrical signal into mechanical energy that creates sound waves that our eardrums can perceive. Additionally, a speaker is made up of a number of parts that work together to create these sound waves.
It’s crucial to keep in mind that no single speaker, let alone one in a car, can faithfully reproduce the entire range of frequencies. To achieve an overall well-balanced listening experience, we, therefore, use a set of speakers, each specializing in particular frequency bands.
A subwoofer is a large-diameter speaker that reproduces subsonic and bass frequencies. Other common speakers include mid-bass drivers, which handle the range between bass and lower midrange, midrange drivers, which reproduce midrange frequencies, and tweeters (producing high frequencies)
The amount of power needed to drive various speaker types is an important consideration when looking at speakers. Smaller speakers run on less power, whereas larger speakers need more power to move their cones.
A speaker’s frequency response specification is arguably its most crucial feature.
We can determine a speaker’s capacity to reproduce frequencies across a certain range and how accurately it does so by looking at the frequency response, which is shown as either a graph or a figure. A frequency response description will demonstrate any attenuation—the failure of a speaker to reproduce a particular frequency—or any exaggeration—of that frequency (known as boosting)
This knowledge is essential when selecting a set of speciality speakers (to ensure that your system accurately covers the full frequency spectrum) and when considering a pair of two-way speakers (to properly assess the speaker set’s ability to reproduce sound accurately).
While a flatter response is generally preferred, your preferred frequency range may depend on your musical preferences. For instance, a speaker set with a low-end focus will improve your listening experience if you only listen to music with a lot of basses, like electronic, hip-hop, and rap.
It’s important to keep in mind that if your speakers are lacking in some areas, you can always use a head unit with a good equalization section to change the tonal qualities of your music; however, signal processing cannot address every issue.
